Why a promo code fails: the real reasons and a checklist
Written by Noura Alshammari · updated
A code is usually rejected because your order misses one of its conditions, not because the code is broken. The usual reasons: it is for first orders or the app only, the basket is under the minimum, the cart has excluded or already-discounted items, another code or bank discount is already on the order, or you paid with a method the offer doesn't cover. Cashback codes don't lower the price at checkout at all. They add credit to your account after delivery.
How the store decides whether to accept a code
Every code at the big stores carries rules stored in the system: who it is for, which products, what minimum, which app or site, how many uses, and until when. When you enter it, checkout tests your order against those rules. If one rule fails, the code is rejected or applies to only part of the cart.
noon explains on its discounts page that you enter the code in the coupon field on the cart page, and a valid code updates the order summary straight away. Its promotions page says each offer has its own terms, with limits, usage caps and exclusions shown in the offer details.
Amazon.sa's promotional code page asks you to enter the code exactly as given, with no spaces before, inside or after it, and to check the discount on the final checkout page before ordering. That is the first thing to check. If you copied the code from a message or an image, clear the field and type it yourself.
The code isn't for you: new customers, first orders, specific phone numbers
Many of the codes passed around online only work on a first order. A documented example: Namshi's FIRST terms say it applies to your first order, works only in the Namshi app, and gives 20% off up to AED/SAR 75. The order must be at least AED 100 or the equivalent, only discountable items count, and the code works once. It also needs a verified phone number from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain or Egypt, and you can't change the delivery address or phone number after using it.
Referral codes have similar limits. Namshi's referral restrictions block the code if the delivery phone number matches the referrer's number, or if the referrer tries to use their own code.
At SHEIN, the coupon policy says some coupons are issued when you open a new account. Coupons from influencers or site pages aren't linked to your account and don't appear under My Coupons.
The basket doesn't qualify: minimum spend, excluded items, existing sales
Minimum spend: most codes need a minimum amount, and some count only qualifying items, not the whole basket. Amazon.sa's Qualified Promotions terms say the offer stops applying if removing items drops the qualifying total below the minimum. The same page requires the same delivery speed for all qualifying and promotional items, a condition many shoppers miss.
Items the code doesn't cover: per Amazon.sa, promotional codes can't be used on digital content, shipping charges, Amazon gift cards, or products sold by marketplace sellers. The amount comes off items sold and shipped by Amazon.sa. noon notes that offers may be limited to a category or brand. For example, the ENBD15 offer on noon Minutes excludes electronics.
Items already on sale: one of SHEIN's coupon types only applies to non-sale items, and order-level coupons exclude tax and shipping. SHEIN's promo code page says codes don't cover shipping or cash-on-delivery fees. On talabat, the UAE Dine Out terms say its discounts can't be used on items the restaurant has already discounted, such as combos and platters, or on public holidays.
Wrong place: app-only codes and another country's store
Some codes are tied to a channel. Namshi's FIRST only works in the app, so it won't apply on the website. Codes are also tied to the country site that issued them. SHEIN's coupon policy says a coupon can only be used on the site where you got it, and coupons vary from site to site. noon says gift cards are valid only in the country where they were bought, with separate terms for the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
So before entering a code, check that the app is set to your country and currency. This matters most if you move between the UAE and Saudi Arabia or shop for family in another country. The table shows one documented case where eligibility differs by country:
| Country | Phone number accepted for Namshi FIRST | noon gift cards |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | Yes (named in the terms) | Saudi-specific terms |
| UAE | Yes (named in the terms) | UAE-specific terms |
| Kuwait | Yes (named in the terms) | Not confirmed |
| Bahrain | Yes (named in the terms) | Not confirmed |
| Qatar | Not named in the terms | Not confirmed |
| Oman | Not named in the terms | Not confirmed |
One code per order, discount caps and expiry dates
No stacking: SHEIN allows one promo code per order, and its policy says each coupon works once and can't be exchanged for cash. noon says most promotions can't be combined with other offers or codes unless the terms say so explicitly. Its bank partnerships page says one discount applies per order: using a code removes the bank discount, and noon credits count as a discount method, so they cancel the bank discount too.
Caps: the advertised percentage stops at a maximum. Examples from official pages:
| Offer | Rate | Cap | Minimum | Usage limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Namshi FIRST | 20% | AED/SAR 75 | AED 100 or equivalent | Once, app only |
| noon Minutes ENBD15 | 15% | AED 30 per transaction | AED 30 | 5 times per card per month |
| Namshi with Alinma cards (Feb 2026) | 25% | SAR 150 | SAR 200 | One order per card |
Expiry: an expired coupon won't be accepted. SHEIN shows expired coupons as unavailable and deletes them after three months. On Amazon, a code you enter stays on your account until you use it or it expires. If the order is cancelled or returned for a refund, you can't use the code again.
The payment method cancels the offer
Bank and wallet offers usually apply automatically when you pay with an eligible card, with no code. They also drop off easily when the payment method changes. noon lists why a bank discount might not appear: the card isn't in the partnership, the offer has ended, the minimum or category wasn't met, a code or noon credits were applied, or you paid through Apple Pay or another wallet instead of the card itself.
Namshi's bank offers work the same way. They exclude payment by Namshi Wallet, gift cards or Apple Pay, exclude buy-now-pay-later, and can't be combined with other codes. On talabat, Talabat Credit works only with merchants that accept online payment, and not for cash on delivery.
In practice: read the payment line in the offer terms before you pay. If it is a bank offer, pay with that card directly, not through a wallet.
"The code was accepted but the price didn't drop": cashback codes
Some codes aren't instant discounts but cashback. The code is accepted and the total stays the same, then credit lands in your account later. noon says coupon cashback is added as noon credits within a few days after delivery. You can track the expected amount and date under Account, noon Credits, Pending & Expiring. This credit can't be moved to a bank account.
At Namshi, cashback arrives 14 days after delivery, because the store waits until returns or cancellations can no longer happen before confirming the amount. The cashback amount appears in the order summary before you place the order. If you see it there, the code is working as designed.
After ordering: returns can cancel or shrink the discount
A code can work at checkout and then part of it disappears after a return. SHEIN gives a riyal example: a coupon worth SAR 6 on orders of SAR 69 to 99, and SAR 15 above SAR 99. If your order is SAR 120 and you return SAR 20 worth of items, the order is still SAR 100, above the threshold, so you get SAR 16.7 back (the SAR 20 minus the coupon's share). If the order falls below every threshold, you lose the discount entirely and its value may come out of your refund.
noon says promotional discounts aren't refundable, so a return gives you a partial refund. Amazon.sa reserves the right to charge your original payment method for the discount or free item if a return takes you below the minimum. At Namshi, cashback is recalculated or removed based on the final order value.
Checklist before you decide "the code doesn't work"
- Type the code yourself with no spaces, keeping capital and small letters exactly as given.
- Read the terms at the official source: the offer page, the help centre, or the coupon details in your account.
- Check eligibility: is it for first orders only? Does it need a phone number from a certain country, or a new account?
- Check channel and country: app or website? Is the app set to your country and currency?
- Work out the minimum on qualifying items, not the whole basket, and without shipping and fees.
- Check the items: any already on sale, from third-party sellers, or in an excluded category? Is the delivery speed the same for all of them?
- Remove other discounts: a second code, store credit, or a bank discount.
- Check the payment method: is the offer tied to a specific card? Does it exclude Apple Pay, wallets, instalments or cash on delivery?
- Check expiry and usage limits, and whether you already used the code on an order that was cancelled.
- Know the code type: for cashback, look for the amount in the order summary, not in the final price.
- If it still fails with no clear reason, contact customer service through the official app and send them the code and a screenshot of the offer.
Questions shoppers ask
Can I use two codes on one order?
Usually not. SHEIN allows one code per order. noon says most of its offers can't be combined unless the terms say so, and an order takes only one discount, whether a bank offer or a code.
Why didn't the bank discount show when I paid with that bank's card?
Reasons noon lists include paying through Apple Pay or another wallet instead of the card directly, having a code or noon credits on the order, missing the minimum, or a card that isn't in the offer.
The code was accepted but the total didn't change. Is something wrong?
If it is a cashback code, that is expected. The cashback shows in the order summary and is added as credit after delivery: within a few days at noon, and 14 days after delivery at Namshi.
I cancelled my order. Do I get the code back?
It depends on the store. On Amazon.sa the code can't be reused after a cancellation or refund. At SHEIN, a coupon linked to your account comes back after a full cancellation if it hasn't expired, but not after a partial return.
Will a UAE store code work on the Saudi store?
Don't assume so. SHEIN limits a coupon to the site that issued it, and noon limits gift cards to the country where they were bought. Use the code on the store of the country it was issued for.
